Description:
Cearamic & Lacquer
I found a "chawan" I made some 20 years ago and decided to make a first trial of lacquer work on this one. In a first step I burned in on the in and out side of the bowl a layer of ki-urushi on which I have thrown a handfull iron ore grain. Then I applied a second thicker layer and burned in again. With this layer the urushi run down the walls and created some drops. On the inside I apllied a layer of black nakanuri and dusted it with little god powder and copper powder. After drying I put on a coat of nahiji urushi. After it has dried I polished the inside first with Amor polishing paste and finally with migako powder and rapseed oil. I found that on the foot of the bowl a chip was off, that probably happened somewhen. From a snow white porcelain cup I broke off a piece to fit the chip which I glued on with shibo urushi as done in kintsugi. This has to be finished in the next days with a fine line of gold. In Japan white is actually not a favored color on ceramic but I allow myself to do this to add a little hidden reflection on the all over dark appearance of the bowl.
