Yamimaki Chawan

Description:

Yamimaki Chawan
Today I finished another ceramic bowl with lacquer finish. I call it "Yamimaki" because this is the term for black lacquer on black lacquer. The outside was created by burning in countless layers of lacquer, sprinkled with "kanshitsu" dry lacquer powder. The shells have been built up with lacquer and iron powder, not dried in the furo but burned on 270°C. Most of them took 5 to 7 layers to have the body the right size. The finish is made by engraving and applying small urushi grains. The inside is created to look like lacquered leather. Several layers of black lacquer have been burned in until the surface was glossy. Then I applied another thick layer of lacquer and put it into the furô. Before the lacquer was dry, I applied egg white mixed with water. This makes the lacquer cracking. The thinner the layer of lacquer the smaller the cracks will appear. Afterwards I applied again several layers of lacquer sparcely sprinkled with kanshitsu powder, all layers burned in, finally ground. In a next step the inner side was thinly lacquered and dusted with copper and silver powder, over lacquered with Kijiro urushi and burned in again. Finally the inside appears in a dark amber tone
